Putting Microsoft Office Documents on the Web:
Word

Microsoft Word documents can be easily translated into a usable HTML format.  This process, known as file type conversion, can be directly applied to your courseware.  For example, if you have syllabi, labs or exercises already typed up in Word, you may use the procedure outlined below to convert them to a web page document and offer them to your students directly off of your web site.

To see an example of a document that was converted from a Word file to a Web Page file, click here.

To perform the file conversion yourself, follow these steps:

  1. Open up the document you wish to convert in Microsoft Word.
  2. From the File menu choose Save as Web Page.  If Save as Web Page is not an option, choose Save as HTML.  If neither of these are an option, you need to have an additional module installed.  Please contact the Help Desk at campus extension 2660 to place a service call.
  3. Save the file somewhere on your computer.  Remember where you save it, since you will need this information for the next step.
  4. Open up FrontPage, and load up your website.
  5. From the File menu choose Import.  The following window will appear.

  6. Click the Add File button.  The following window will appear.

  7. Find your file on your computer and click the Open button.  Then click the OK button.
  8. Your file will appear in the Folder List in FrontPage.  You may now treat it like you would any other web page file with respects to creating Hyperlinks, etc.

If you wish to edit the page that you have just imported, follow these steps.

  1. Right click on the file that you wish to edit.  Choose the Open With option.
  2. Choose FrontPage.
