PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint presentations can be easily translated into a usable HTML format.  This process, known as file type conversion, can be directly applied to your courseware.  For example, if you have presentations, lectures or student reports already created in PowerPoint, you may use the procedure outlined below to convert them to a web page document and offer them to your students directly off of your web site.

PowerPoint 97

  1. Open up your presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint.
  2. From the File menu choose Save as HTML.  A window similar to the following will appear.

  3. Click the Next button.  The following window will appear.

  4. If this is your first time converting a PowerPoint presentation to a web page, click the Next button.  If you have gone through this procedure before, and you wish to use a set of saved settings, choose that setting from the list and click the Next button.  The following window will appear.

  5. Choose which type of interface you wish to use for your web page.  Using frames adds functionality to your presentation, but older browsers (< v3.0) may not be able to display them correctly.  When you have finished, click the Next button.  The following window will appear.

  6. Click the Next button unless you wish to retain animation on your new presentation web page.  Retaining animation will cause your viewers to have to download and install additional software.  If you wish to retain animation, click the button labeled PowerPoint animation and then click the Next button.  The following window will appear.

  7. To maintain compatibility with older computers, keep this option set to 640 by 480.  Then click the Next button.  The following window will appear.

  8. Enter your contact information.  Check off the box labeled Download original presentation only if you wish to give your users the ability to use and potentially modify your presentation.  Click the Next button when finished, and the following window will appear.

  9. Click the Next button.  The following window will appear.

  10. Select the style of button you wish to have on your page.  This button style will handle all navigation throughout your presentation.  Click the Next button when you've finished, and the following window will appear.

  11. Choose where you would like your buttons placed in relation to the rest of your presentation.  Also check off whether you would like your users to be able to view your slide notes alongside your presentation.  Click the Next button, and the following window will appear.

  12. Finally, click the Browse button and find a location on your hard drive to create the web based version of your presentation.  When you have finished, click the Next button, and then the Finish button.  If you wish to save your presentation settings, you may do so at this time.  Otherwise, click the Don't Save button to continue.
  13. PowerPoint will process your slides and create a directory in the location specified containing the web version of your presentation.
  14. Open up FrontPage, and load up your website.
  15. From the File menu choose Import.  The following window will appear.

  16. Click the Add Folder button and go to the directory that holds the HTML version of your PowerPoint presentation.  There should be a folder in this directory with the same name as your PowerPoint file.  Click on this folder and click the OK button.   Click the OK button again.
  17. Your folder will appear in the Folder List in FrontPage.  To link your presentation, create a hyperlink to the file named index.htm within this new folder.
