Advanced Online Quiz

This exercise will take you through an example of an advanced online quiz implemented using Flash v5.0.  To work through this exercise, you must have Flash 5.0 installed.  To install the product, please click here for instructions.

This is what your online quiz will look like when it's completed:

  1. Open Flash v5.0
  2. Open up one of the pre-made quiz packages (Help->Samples->Quiz3)
  3. Extend the keyframes on the following layers out to frame #6 (Insert->Frame)
    1. Actions
    2. Results Page
    3. Quiz Options
    4. Page Title
    5. Buttons
    6. Background
  4. Open up the Flash Learning Extensions library  (Window->Common Libraries->Learning Interactions).
  5. Click on the "Interactions" layer.
  6. Drag the symbol labeled "Multiple Choice" out onto the stage.
  7. Center the question on the stage.  If necessary, change your magnification level (View->Magnification).
  8. Click once on the question and click on Window->Panels->Clip Parameters.
  9. If the Clip Parameters window is too small, enlarge it by grabbing onto the corner of it with your mouse and dragging it out.
  10. Check off the "Knowledge Track" option under the Tracking tab.  For the purpose of simplicity, we won't be customizing the questions for this quiz.
  11. Insert a keyframe at the next frame (#2).
  12. Drag out another question from the library (pick a different one).  Repeat steps 7-11 until you have every different type of question out on the stage.
  13. Click on the hashed box that is labeled "Quiz Options".
  14. Click on Window->Panels->Clip Parameters
  15. Set the clip parameters to look like the following:

  16. Save your quiz (File->Save As).
  17. Publish your quiz (F12)
  18. Now you can see how your quiz will look in a web browser.
That's it!  If you would like to customize the questions, you may do so at this time.  If you would like to customize the artwork used by the questions (for the drag & drop interactions, for instance), be sure to follow these guidelines:
  • It is generally easier to work with customized questions if they are in their own folder within the movie library.  Open up the library (Window->Library) and create a new folder (call it "Question #2 or something similar).  Drag the appropriate files into this folder.
  • If your quiz contains more than one instance of the same question type (say, if you want to use three drag and drop modules), you will have to create three separate directories - one for each question.  Once you drag the appropriate files into your directory, they must be renamed so that they are not confused with the other questions (i.e. - rename DD_Buttons to 1-DD_Buttons).
  • Double click on the object you wish to modify from within your Library window.  From there you will be taken to a separate timeline.  Modify this timeline accordingly.  The changes will then be reflected back on the main timeline.
