Course Web Site Development:
Build a Basic Website:
Setting up a website

You have several options on how you want to begin building your web site.  You can build one from scratch, which will start you with a blank web page.  If you already have a web page you wish to modify, you can import that site from the web and use FrontPage to edit it!  There are also templates available for TCNJ faculty and staff, perfect for those who want a attractive web site with minimal effort.

Creating a new web site from scratch:

If you're using a Beast account:
  • Click on File in the upper left corner.
  • Drag down to New and then mouse over and select Page or Web...
  • Now a task pane will open in the right side of your FrontPage window.  Click once on the Empty Web icon under the New heading.
  • You must create a local directory on your hard drive where you will store the files for your web page.  You will open and save your work in this directory, and when all the work is finished, you will upload and publish the files in the directory.  Type the directory in the text box on the right side of the window as seen below.

You may also use the Browse button below the text field to select a location or create a new one. The default should be a  My Web directory in My Documents, which works well, but you may change it if you desire.  If the default location is not filled in and you wish to use it, copy and paste the following command line. Be sure to use your individual user name where indicated.

    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\My Documents\My Web\

  • Click OK to continue.
If you're using an Intrasun or Facweb account:
  • Click on File in the upper left corner.
  • Click on Open Web.
  • Click on My Network Places in the left frame.
  • Click on the Create New Folder icon at the top of the window.  This icon looks like a small file folder with a "sparkle" coming off of it.  The following window will appear.

  • Make sure the radio button for Create a shortcut to an exsisting Network Place is selected as shown above. Click the Next button. The following window will appear.

  • In the Location text field type in the URL of your Facweb or Intrasun website.  This information will have been mailed to you from the system administrator.  Hit the Tab key to move to the Shortcut name field. This field will be automatically filled in for you. You may change this if you wish, but it is not necessary. Click the Finish button.
  • The system will ask you to type in your username and password for this account.  This information is also included in the same e-mail from the system administrator.
  • Click the Finish button.
  • Click the Open button.

That's it!  You have successfully created a new, blank website.
